Any student wishing an extra credit assignment for Science may write a two page paper with this topic:

Spacecraft reentering Earth's atmosphere encounter tremendous friction forces. Research the ways materials are designed to resist or reduce the heat generated by the friction of reentry.

Because grades are due so quickly after the end of the year, I will be collecting folders early on Monday, 5/17/10, so that any information that happens after that date will be small enough to check at the end of the year. Folders should have all information filed in the appropriate divider. If a student is missing the actual paper, s/he may put a blank piece of paper in its place with the name of the assignment and date due to show acknowledgement of the assignment, and at least partial credit will be given. The folder counts as a test grade, and it is meant as an easy "A."

Spring Trip Week: 4/26-4/30/10

Group 5 G will not be assigned homework during the Spring Trip in our courses. Instead, I would like each student to observe closely some aspect of the Spring Trip that s/he found most meaningful and be able to write about it when they return.

Students who don't go on the Spring Trip will have Math homework during this week, but will not have Math homework next week. Returning students will have Math homework next week, 5/3/10-5/7/10, and the other students will not.

Field Trip to Joseph's Farm: 5/25/10

Groups 5 have been invited to visit language teacher, Joseph Marquette's, farm on Tuesday, May 25,2010. Students will learn how science and math are incorporated into running a farm and they will have the opportunity to see animals (heritage chickens, ducks, rabbits), vegetables and fruit orchards in various stages of development. We will have a picnic lunch (bagged lunch with no glass bottles, please) and be back by pick up at 3:00 pm.

Students should come dressed for rain or shine (boots are highly recommended for mud!) with appropriate outerwear. If you have questions about this, please contact me.

Science Fair Project 6-wk. Experiment: 4/21/10

Groups 5 will be videotaped with their six week Science Fair Experiments on Wednesday, April 21 during Science Class. Students will be graded on a backboard and a 4 minute well-rehearsed presentation with 1 minute for questions. All written work should be in the student's own words with the exception of quoted material or graphs which should have a source referenced.

The evening of April 21st will be Family and Friends Night from 6:30-8:00p.m. when parents, relatives and friends can come and be dazzled by students' presentations. Students will provide a theme-related SNACK that evening to share with their audience.

Max Petersen and Lily Bailey read their DAR essays at the Samuel Holten House in Danvers on Sunday, March 14th during the local level awards ceremony. Max won Best 8th grade Essay and Lily won Honorable Mention for the 6th grade Essay. Both students won at the local and state levels for their perspectives as a settler (Max) and a Chinese worker (Lily) as the golden spike was struck to unite the two sections of the Transcontinental Railroad at Promontory Peak. Each student received a medal, a certificate and a flag, and had their pictures taken with members of the General Israel Putnam Chapter of the DAR for their wonderful work. Congratulations, Max and Lily!!

Since we have not had a snow day this year, we decided to have one in Group 5G class! March 31st is the date, (the day that the Science Research Paper is due), and we will celebrate a job finished and well-done. Max Petersen in Group 5G (Local and State Winner) and Lily Bailey (Local and State Honorable Mention) in Group 5B will be receiving awards at two ceremonies. The state ceremony is on February 22nd at the Plymouth Library at 2:00 p.m. The local ceremony will be March 14th at the Samuel Holten House in Ipswich. 1/4/09: Create a Country Project due. Make a map and a five minute presentation of the country of your design. You are the monarch! Use what you know about medieval history to design the physical topography. Also consider your subjects - how will they get food, medicine, clean living conditions, and jobs. How will you defend your subjects or your borders? How will you ensure a long monarchy? You should be able to defend your ideas about how you set your country up. Write up your ideas in order to turn it in.

Group 5G Art Homework 11/17/09

Art Teacher, Alison Landoni, will be having Group 5G create a ceiling mural in the new Art & Science Center. Acrylic paint usage requires that each student bring an oversized smock or long-sleeved shirt to wear over their school clothes as well as an old baseball hat to cover their hair. Please use permanent marker to put names on their belongings. No child will be allowed to share clothing with another. If a student shows up without the covering, s/he will not be allowed to participate.

Homework assignment:
For 11/18: Please bring in 3 color images off the internet of things you would like to incorporate in your mural section. We will complete our final sketches on or grids, and transfer the images onto the ceiling.

Group 5G's Crazy Days!!

In the spirit of fun and celebration, Group 5G have decided to add two "crazy" days to our class 'holidays!' On November 18th, we will celebrate "Donut Day," and on December 16th we will enthusiastically support "Chocolate Anything Day."

In the same vein, we have designated Januaary 6, 2010 for History Extra Credit, with the topic "Start Your Own Medieval Country." Students will design and specify their domain in a one page essay, single spaced, Arial font 12, 1" margins on top, bottom, and sides.

H.S. Biology Students to act as Clark "CDC"

High school biology students have begun a unit on the Pandemic Flu. We have read and talked about how viruses are spread, and we have visited various government websites to track the spread of H1N1 and seasonal flus, and to investigate the best ways to prevent students at Clark from catching or spreading them.

Each High School Biology student has been assigned a classroom in the lower school which they will observe during a Tuesday morning class period in order to collect data regarding: surfaces touched by students and how many times they are touched; how many students exhibit signs of illness (coughing, sneezing, feeling nauseous) and how many times each occurs; how many students touch their eyes, nose, mouths; how many students use Purell after sneezing or coughing; how many students wash their hands before or after eating; how many students cover their mouths and noses when sneezing or coughing; and observations about what areas could be cleaned by students on a daily basis versus those areas which could be cleaned by adults.

After collecting and analyzing data, high school students will make recommendations to teachers, and they will swab and culture various high-traffic areas before preventitive measures have been made and after they have been put in place.

A public health presentation to lower school students during Morning Meeting will be made, and High School Biology students will develop hands-on activities for younger groups and a powerpoint presentation and lesson plan will be developed for older groups. Posters will be put up in bathrooms and in each building to remind students of what they have learned.

The goal is to have High School Biology serve as the repository of preventive health information for the Clark School community, and to help all of us stay as healthy as possible this winter.

Comedian Bob Gautreau to visit 10/29/09!

As part of our "What is Funny?" writing project, comedian Bob Gautreau will offer a two-hour improvisational comedy workshop to Group 5G and 5B from 9:30-11:30 a.m. on Thursday, October 29th. While a student at Emerson College, Bob appeared on national television on HBO's Campus Comedy hosted by Joe Piscopo. His impressions have been seen at the Comedy Connection, An Evening at the Improv, Las Vegas venues and he is a teacher of comedy at the Cambridge Adult Education Center. We look forward to learning more about "What is Funny?" from a person whose livelihood depends on knowing the answer!

What is Funny? Project

You have probably heard about our large writing project for this year - a Humorous Story of 10-50 pages which will be submitted to the Boston Globe Writing Contest on 12/4/09. We will spend class time during Reading and Writing and homework time, producing this work. Your student has a written timeline in their Reading/Writing folders which you can refer to for deadlines.

During the next few weeks, we will be seeing funny television and movie clips of famous comedians - Red Skelton, Sid Caesar, Jonathan Winters, Lucille Ball, some of the less offensive of Don Rickles, to name a few. I would also like to show clips from more contemporary comedians like Will Farrell, Jim Carrey, Saturday Night Live skits (e.g.,"Bassomatic"). The campfire scene from Blazing Saddles contains bodily humor and is funny because some people find it offensive. Your students have assured me that they are mature enough to handle it, but if you should feel differently, please let me know.

All Group 5G students will be submitting a 600-1000 words paper for the DAR topic: "Describe how you felt on May 10, 1869, when the golden spike was driven at Promontory Summit, Utah, to celebrate the completion of the First Transcontinental Railroad." Each student is asked to pretend they are "either a settler planning to use the train to travel to their new home in the West, an Irish or Chinese worker who helped build the line, or a Native American whose way of life was greatly affected by the railroad." Each paper should have a title page (see handout), a bibliography, and you should hand in two copies which you have printed at home.

As always, please back your work up on your thumb drive so that if Murphy's Law prevails, you are covered!

Teambuilding Skills We Can Learn from Geese
Author Unknown

Fact #1 – As each bird flaps its wings, it creates uplift for the bird following. By flying in a "V" formation, the whole flock adds 71 percent greater flying range than if one bird flew alone.
Lesson Learned – People who share a common direction and sense of community can get where they are going quicker and easier because they are traveling on the strength of one another.

Fact #2 – Whenever a goose falls out of formation, it suddenly feels the drag and resistance of trying to fly alone and quickly gets back into formation to take advantage of the lifting power of the bird immediately in front.
Lesson Learned – If we have as much sense as geese, we will stay in formation with those who are ahead of where we want to go and be willing to accept their help as well as give ours to others.

Fact #3 – When the lead goose gets tired, it rotates back into the formation and another goose flies at the point position.
Lesson Learned – It pays to take turns doing the hard tasks and sharing leadership.

Fact #4 – The geese in formation honk from behind to encourage those up front to keep up their speed.
Lesson Learned – We need to make sure our honking from behind is encouraging, and not something else.

Fact #5 – When a goose gets sick or wounded or shot down, two geese drop out of formation and follow it down to help and protect it. They stay with it until it is able to fly again, or dies. Then they launch out on their own, with another formation, or they catch up with their flock.
Lesson Learned – If we have as much sense as geese do, we too, will stand by each other in difficult times as well as when we are strong.

The purpose of going to Hulbert Outdoor Recreation Center is to promote teambuilding for students within a group and within the school community. Students must leave reliance on technology (cell phones, ipods, videogames, television, computers, etc.)and instead work on communicating with each other. The experience provides opportunities to test each individual’s personal limits, to learn what coping skills work and don’t work for success as an individual, and to learn the most effective strategies for working with other students and as part of a group. Students must communicate, cooperate and build trust with one another – qualities that they will bring back to school and that they will hopefully expand.

Your assignment is to write a five page paper (Arial 12,block style (no indentations for paragraphs, just skip a space between paragraphs), single spaced font, 1” margins on top, bottom and sides) on the following topic:

Using the five facts of Teambuilding Skills We Can Learn from Geese, write your own interpretation of each fact, giving examples from your own (or someone you know) experience. Then talk about what you personally can do to help our class be the most cohesive and most supportive group.

HS Field Trip to Biogen IDEC: Nov. 5th

On, Thursday, November 5th, both HS Biology and Chemistry students will travel to Biogen in Cambridge to participate in a laboratory experiment on patient exposure to an infectious agent (e.g., mock HIV). We will leave promptly at 8:30 a.m. and be back in time for pick up at the end of the day. Students should bring a non-messy snack and bag lunch (no glass) to eat in the van. This is a very interesting opportunity to see what real scientists do as a profession.

Group 5G Field Trip to Biogen IDEC: Wed. 10/28/09

Groups 5G and 5B will be going to Biogen IDEC Community Lab on Wednesday, October 28, 2009 to do an experiment on the transformation of E. Coli. Students will don goggles, lab coats and gloves in order to work with scientific laboratory equipment to investigate DNA proteins. We will leave promptly at 8:30 a.m. and return by pick-up at 3:00 p.m. Students are asked to bring a bag lunch (no glass) and non-messy snack to eat in the van in case our lab runs longer. Please wear appropriate clothing if there is a chance of inclement weather as we may have to walk from the parking space to the lab. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to see how interesting and exciting a career in science can be!

If you have finished your interview, you may begin drafting the biography using 5 areas (e.g., life experiences, hobbies, etc.) that you believe are the most indicative of your person. Make sure that you have enough information to do a 5 page paper.

History: Except for Chapter 4 which I will supplement for our luncheon at The Medieval Manor on October 21, students who have done the first 6 chapters will be teaching it to the class as a quick review and to bring new students up to speed. If you should have a problem, please give me a call between 7:00-9:00pm and I will be happy to try to solve it over the phone. If we aren't successful, we can meet first thing the next morning to solve the problem. All Unit Reviews are done in class after meeting with me first. If you reach a Unit Review, you may do the "Extra for Experts" on the back of it and then read and try the first few pages of the next chapter. Please be sure that you don't do more than 5 pages without getting them checked.

Welcome to Group 5 Green!! I hope you had a fun and relaxing summer and you are ready for a fun and exciting year!

You might have noticed on the supplies list that was sent out that I asked for you to set up your subject folders in a specific way. I would like you to bring all of them to class on the first day so that we can label them and discuss how you will be organizing them for the year.

Also, please bring your book reports for collection on the first day of class. We will be discussing them right away while they are fresh in your minds. I appreciate it.
