TUESDAY: Trip to Joseph's Farm. Please bring a bag lunch and waterbottle. Be sure to bring a sketchbook or diary. Snack will be eaten in the van on the drive up, so please make sure it's not messy.

WEDNESDAY: Literary Character Day.

THURSDAY: Q4 ends. Please be sure that all work is completed and turned in by 5/27/10, as there can be no further extensions.

FRIDAY: Teacher Development Day. No school for students.

Science Extra Credit

Any student wishing an extra credit assignment for Science may write a two page paper with this topic:

Spacecraft reentering Earth's atmosphere encounter tremendous friction forces. Research the ways materials are designed to resist or reduce the heat generated by the friction of reentry.

This will be due on Wednesday, 5/26/10 and will count as an additional test grade. No late papers will be accepted.

Science Test on Thursday, 5/20/10

Group 5G will have one last Science Test on Sections 1,2,3 of Chapter 2 Physics on Thursday, 5/20/10. The test will be given during Reading and Writing blocks in case anyone needs additional time. We will prepare for it on Wednesday, during Reading and Writing blocks so that the material will be fresh. Since we have the Art Show Rain Date during our Science block on Wednesday, this seemed to be the best idea. The days are dwindling!

Group 5G folders collected on 5/17/10

Folders for Reading/Writing and Science will be collected on Monday, 5/17/10. Since each folder counts as a test grade, please be sure that they are organized with papers in the correct divider. If you are missing any assignments, please label a piece of paper with that assisgnment's name and due date to show that you know what's missing, and you will receive at least partial credit for it.

Math Folders for Denise's Class Due on 5/14/10

Math books and folders, along with Unit Review Graphs will be collected on Friday, 5/14/10. Please be sure that you have all calculations and that your book is orderly. You will be given the equivalent of a test grade for your folder, so please make this an easy "A".

Homework 5/10/10-5/14/10

Math: Students have 30 minutes of math/night, Monday-Friday. All corrections should be done before moving on to new material. ALL calculations must be shown. If you do not have calculations, you will be in Lunch Bunch every day until they are done. STUDENTS WILL HAVE MATH HOMEWORK MONDAY, TUESDAY, WEDNESDAY NIGHT, EVEN THOUGH WE DON'T HAVE MATH CLASS DURING THE MORNING.

ALL SCHOOL TESTING DURING THE MORNING (8:30-11:45), MONDAY, TUESDAY AND WEDNESDAY, with regular classes in the afternoon, except for Wednesday, when we have the ART SHOW in the afternoon.

TUESDAY AFTERNOON: In class, students will decide on 'unusual' words for next week, after having their Phobia words test. Students will be tested on 5/18/10 on their most unusual word from U-Z in the dictionary. David and Richard will choose "U" words; Nick and Max will choose "V" words; Eddie and Maya will choose "W" words; Will and Kevin will choose "X" words; Zachary and Bailey will choose "Y" words; Allie and Jessica will choose "Z" words.

Study Hall: Continue "The Great Debaters" if students' assignments allow.

11:00 A.M.-11:40 A.M.: Jeremy Reiner, WHDH Weather will be speaking to Groups 3,4,5 in Bryan's Room, in the Barn. We will have Math and Reading block before he arrives. In the afternoon, we will have regular classes.

Writing block: Finish "The Great Debaters." Talk about format for debates on June 1,2.

All folders will be collected on Mon., 5/17/10

Because grades are due so quickly after the end of the year, I will be collecting folders early on Monday, 5/17/10, so that any information that happens after that date will be small enough to check at the end of the year. Folders should have all information filed in the appropriate divider. If a student is missing the actual paper, s/he may put a blank piece of paper in its place with the name of the assignment and date due to show acknowledgement of the assignment, and at least partial credit will be given. The folder counts as a test grade, and it is meant as an easy "A."

Spring Trip Week: 4/26-4/30/10

Group 5 G will not be assigned homework during the Spring Trip in our courses. Instead, I would like each student to observe closely some aspect of the Spring Trip that s/he found most meaningful and be able to write about it when they return.

Students who don't go on the Spring Trip will have Math homework during this week, but will not have Math homework next week. Returning students will have Math homework next week, 5/3/10-5/7/10, and the other students will not.

Please remember that we have Medical Disease words for Wordly Wise on Tuesday, 5/4/10, and a half day ending at noon on Wednesday, 5/5/10 with the Spring Performance that evening. On Thursday, 5/6/10, Sharon Clark will join us to do calligraphy during Reading and Writing blocks.

Field Trip to Joseph's Farm: 5/25/10

Groups 5 have been invited to visit language teacher, Joseph Marquette's, farm on Tuesday, May 25,2010. Students will learn how science and math are incorporated into running a farm and they will have the opportunity to see animals (heritage chickens, ducks, rabbits), vegetables and fruit orchards in various stages of development. We will have a picnic lunch (bagged lunch with no glass bottles, please) and be back by pick up at 3:00 pm.

Students should come dressed for rain or shine (boots are highly recommended for mud!) with appropriate outerwear. If you have questions about this, please contact me.

Science Fair Project 6-wk. Experiment: 4/21/10

Groups 5 will be videotaped with their six week Science Fair Experiments on Wednesday, April 21 during Science Class. Students will be graded on a backboard and a 4 minute well-rehearsed presentation with 1 minute for questions. All written work should be in the student's own words with the exception of quoted material or graphs which should have a source referenced.

The evening of April 21st will be Family and Friends Night from 6:30-8:00p.m. when parents, relatives and friends can come and be dazzled by students' presentations. Students will provide a theme-related SNACK that evening to share with their audience.

Congratulations to Max Petersen and Lily Bailey!

Max Petersen and Lily Bailey read their DAR essays at the Samuel Holten House in Danvers on Sunday, March 14th during the local level awards ceremony. Max won Best 8th grade Essay and Lily won Honorable Mention for the 6th grade Essay. Both students won at the local and state levels for their perspectives as a settler (Max) and a Chinese worker (Lily) as the golden spike was struck to unite the two sections of the Transcontinental Railroad at Promontory Peak. Each student received a medal, a certificate and a flag, and had their pictures taken with members of the General Israel Putnam Chapter of the DAR for their wonderful work. Congratulations, Max and Lily!!

March Vacation Homework

In-Class "Snow Day" for 3/31/10!!

Since we have not had a snow day this year, we decided to have one in Group 5G class! March 31st is the date, (the day that the Science Research Paper is due), and we will celebrate a job finished and well-done. Students can wear pajamas or sweats and slippers for a day of movies, games and ordering out for lunch!!

Folders Collected on Monday, 3/22/10

With our two-week vacation coming up, I wanted to be sure that students take the opportunity to organize their Math, Science,and Reading/Writing folders in preparation for collection on Monday, 3/22/10. Folders should have all work from Quarter 3 placed in the appropriate section of their dividers. The folder will get a grade based on how complete it is, and will count as an extra test grade for that subject. If you are absent on that date, please have a parent drop them off at school. DAR Awards on 2/22/10 and 3/14/10

Max Petersen in Group 5G (Local and State Winner) and Lily Bailey (Local and State Honorable Mention) in Group 5B will be receiving awards at two ceremonies. The state ceremony is on February 22nd at the Plymouth Library at 2:00 p.m. The local ceremony will be March 14th at the Samuel Holten House in Ipswich. Max and Lily will be reading their essays at the local ceremony. Congratulations to both for a job well done.

Spelling Bee on February 16th!!

Groups 4, 5G and 5B will be taking a short break from Wordly Wise to prepare for a Spelling Bee. Students will be using an actual list from the 1984 Scripps Spelling Bee! They will be tested ONLY on spelling of 15-20 words, not vocabulary and parts of speech, each week. Finally, on Tuesday, February 16th, we will have a live Spelling Bee between the three groups from 1p.m.-2:00pm.

Science Research Paper Due Wed. 3/31/10

Group 5G will be putting together an 8 page Research Paper in stages:
On 1/27/10 - Sources are due: 2 books, no more than 2 internet
On 2/3/0 - an outline is due
On 2/10/10 - draft of the first two pages are due
On 2/17/10 - draft of first four pages are due
On 2/24/10 - draft of the first six pages are due
On 3/3/10 - draft of the eight page paper is due
First draft of the final paper is due.
Final paper with bibliography is due on 3/31/10.

We will be talking about the structure of the Research Paper in class as we go.

Mid-Term Exam: Thursday, 1/14/10 at 9:00 a.m. HAND IN YOUR COMPLETED AND ORGANIZED SCIENCE FOLDER BEFORE YOU TAKE THE MID-TERM. Two sharpened pencils are all you need. Please be sure to eat breakfast so you will be alert and have energy for the day. RELAX! Everything on the exam is what you have had, and what we have discussed in the review.

Science Class: 1/13/10

We will be trying to make our own indicators for acids and bases in Science class on Wednesday, 1/13/10. Students will be bringing in the following items:
Will- lemon juice; Eddie-red peppers, David-blueberries; Richard - beets; Maya - strawberries ; Jessica- raspberries; Nick-cherries; Bailey - turmeric (in the spice section); Kevin - tomato juice; Allie - pomegranate; Max - orange juice. Students should wear old clothes or art smocks as we will be dealing with juice that stains.

Science Fair Project Dates

Group 5G will be videotaping their Science Fair Project (a 6 week data collection of a tested variable)on Wednesday, April 21, 2010 during Science Class. Family and Friends Night will be held on April 21, 2010 from 6:30pm-8:00pm when parents, family and friends can come and be dazzled by the presentations on the students' various research projects!

History: Please organize and make sure your folder is complete for grading. It will be collected on Tuesday, 1/12/10.

No Wordly Wise Test for Tuesday 1/12/10! All Wordly Wise Texts should be turned in to me for grading.
